Reality check: Matthieu Blazy is still very much at Chanel, running collections since December 2024. The “he’s out” chatter? Pure April Fool’s mischief.

For a few hours on April 1st, everyone in fashion panicked. One post from @diet_prada was all it took. Screenshots flew, group chats blew up, and Instagram accounts reposted it like wildfire. Fashion insiders panicked like it was the end of the world, again. It felt like another twist in the never-ending creative director carousel.

Then the truth landed. Joke’s on us.

The funniest part? How believable it was. Blazy has been quietly shaping Chanel, but the industry’s obsession with succession gossip makes any sudden “departure” feel plausible. Designers move between houses constantly. Everyone speculates. Everyone shares. Everyone acts like it might be true.

Even Chanel isn’t immune. A house built by Coco Chanel and immortalised by Karl Lagerfeld is still the ultimate gossip magnet. Every collection, every appointment, every whispered rumour travels faster than a runway reveal.

For one delicious day, the industry fell for it. And in doing so, the prank did exactly what a good joke should: it held up a mirror. Fashion loves drama, even when it’s fake.

The lesson? In this world, a creative shake-up always feels imminent. And sometimes, the industry is just waiting to bite. April Fool’s or not, never underestimate how fast fashion loses its mind over a headline.
