Joaquin Phoenix finds himself in rather strange company in Gentle Monster’s latest campaign. The Korean eyewear label has unveiled the first look at its upcoming Intelligent Eyewear campaign film, directed by filmmaker Jonathan Glazer, and the premise is anything but ordinary.

Phoenix plays a salesman who checks into an unfamiliar hotel, only to encounter a series of increasingly bizarre occurrences. Strange characters, incomprehensible conversations and an unsettling atmosphere gradually turn his surroundings into something altogether unfamiliar. At the end of a corridor bathed in red light, he encounters mysterious figures and begins communicating with them through the intelligent eyewear.

It is an unusual setting for an eyewear campaign, but then Gentle Monster has never been particularly interested in playing by conventional rules. Under Glazer’s direction, an ordinary hotel becomes the backdrop for a surreal encounter between the familiar and the unknown. Phoenix, meanwhile, moves between bewilderment, curiosity, fear and amusement as his character attempts to make sense of what is happening around him.

The intelligent eyewear is woven directly into the storyline, allowing its communication capabilities to feature as part of the unfolding narrative. Rather than simply presenting the collection through a series of product shots, the film places the eyewear within an unexpected situation, with Phoenix using it to understand and communicate with characters he would otherwise struggle to comprehend.

Since its beginnings in 2011, Gentle Monster has built a reputation for eyewear that rarely goes unnoticed, alongside campaigns and flagship stores that draw heavily from the worlds of art and visual culture. Its move into Intelligent Eyewear brings that same appetite for experimentation into technology, with fashion and functionality meeting in a rather unconventional setting.

The full campaign film is scheduled for release later this month, but there is little time to wait for those keen to get their hands on the collection. Pre-orders for Gentle Monster Intelligent Eyewear open on 12 November, followed by a public preview in New York from 13 to 23 November. Both pre-orders and preview registration will be available through the official Gentle Monster website.

For now, we have a salesman, a rather peculiar hotel and Joaquin Phoenix navigating a world that becomes stranger by the minute. Not quite your usual eyewear campaign.
