I have always had a soft spot for Invader. There is something rather brilliant about an artist who can turn a wall into a piece of pop culture history, one tiny ceramic tile at a time.

Inspired by the pixel graphics of early video games, the French artist has spent decades installing his recognisable mosaics across cities around the world. His colourful, blocky characters bring the look of old-school arcade games into the urban landscape, becoming familiar sights on buildings and street corners.

Now, Singapore gets its own opportunity to explore his work.

INVASION Singapore marks Invader’s first solo exhibition in Southeast Asia, bringing his practice from the streets into the New Bahru School Hall from 17 to 31 January. Admission is free.

The exhibition will feature mosaics, prints and other works, offering a closer look at an artist whose practice extends well beyond his signature street installations.

What I particularly enjoy about Invader’s work is its simplicity. Those little pixelated figures recall the video games many of us grew up with (Super Mario Bros. or Tetris, anyone?), yet the ceramic tiles give them a physical presence that feels entirely different from seeing them on a screen.

His installations also change the way we look at the city around us. Ordinary buildings become part of his artistic playground, while familiar video-game imagery finds an unexpected home in public spaces.

With INVASION Singapore, visitors can explore more of Invader’s practice in one place, from his street-inspired mosaics to his studio work. For anyone who has followed his career, it is a rare chance to see his work here without having to travel from city to city in search of it.

INVASION Singapore runs from 17 to 31 January 2027 at New Bahru School Hall. Admission is free.
